postheadericon Side Lighting – Photography

Of all the types of direct sunlight, side lighting is probably the most useful when it is important to bring out modeling and texture in the subject, and this is all down to the way that the shadows fall.

Shadows are the feature of side lighting that stands out the most, and it is these shadows that show the relief of surfaces and objects. The other condition under which the sunlight is at right angles to the camera’s view is when the sun is overhead, but, in this case, the ground limits the extent of the shadows, and also tends to act as a reflector to fill them in. The shadows from side lighting have three effects. The first is that the shadow edge traces the shape of the front of the subject, and so has a modeling effect. The second effect is on surface texture. Shadows are longest under side lighting, and so the small ridges, wrinkles, and other fine details of a surface show up in the strongest relief. The third effect of side lighting is on contrast. If the sky is clear, and there is nothing nearby to reflect the light, such as buildings, the contrast between light and shade will be high.

postheadericon Natural Light – Morning and Afternoon

A lower sun makes life more interesting for photography. Their is more variety than with midday sun, because the sunlight interacts more with buildings, people and objects, and you can choose different camera angles to it.

For striking immediately attractive lighting, the morning and the afternoon are some of the best times of day for shooting. Instead of everything being bathed in the same light from above, there is more local interest as the sunlight strikes the sides of objects and casts less predictable shadows. The lower angle of the suns is more flattering to most subjects than that around midday. In addition, while the sun – when it is well clear of the horizon, but not really high – may lack the potential drama that it has around dawn and dusk, it still gives attractive and more reliable lighting. The color is nearer a neutral white and, if find a long run of orange and red-hued images exaggerated, it is more straightforward. If a true color rendering is important, shoot when the sun is at least an hour or two away from the horizon.

Make full use of the sun’s lower angle by choosing its angle to the camera: behind, in front or tone side. The visual effects are quite different, and are more accentuated when the sun is closer to the horizon. When shooting silhouettes in mid-morning and mid-afternoon you need tallish subjects for best effect. The most characteristic lighting effect at theses times is side lighting, which can be both dramatic and useful.

postheadericon Skylight

Indirect lighting from the sky – that is, when the sun is shaded by an obstruction – is soft and potentially attractive, but its color varies widely. Traditionally, artists’ studios were built with large north-facing windows because the gentle illumination was consistent. Known as “north light” or skylight, this light may appear tot he eye to be consistent, but in reality it has very unreliable color properties. This meant that it was generally avoided during the days of color film, but fortunately digital cameras can easily neutralize the color. Skylight is blue because of the scattering of short wavelengths in the atmosphere. The blueness varies with the weather conditions and the altitude (it is more blue in the thinner air of mountains). Its effect is weakened by clouds and by any bright object, such as a white building, that reflects sunlight. Although skylight is what remains on a sunny day when the direct sunlight is blocked, it behaves, from the points of view of taking pictures, as a light source in itself.

Skylight is most important when you are photographing entirely in shade. What happens in this situation is that, because there is only one kind of illumination visible and it is consistent, the eye expects it to be neutral in color; in other words, white. Occasionally it is, but more often it is not, and that is when the white balance of a digital camera comes into its own. The “shade” setting can vary according tot he manufacturer, but is typically around 8000K. Some camera menus allow this to be raised or lowered. Remember that the eye is a poor judge of color temperature in shade, but check to see how blue the sky looks, as this makes up most of the illumination, added to by local reflecting surfaces (such as walls, sand, or water).

postheadericon Bright Sun, Clear sky

The most basic, least complicated form of natural light is the sun in a clear sky. Without clouds or other weather effects, the lighting conditions are predictable during most of the day.

The sun’s arc through the sky varies with the season and the latitude, but it is consistent. As the sun rises in the sky, the light levels increase. They rise quickly in the morning and fall quickly in the late afternoon, bu during the middle of the day they change very little. Once the sun is at about 40 degrees above the horizon, it is almost at its brightest. How long it spends above this height depends on the season and the latitude. In the tropics, this can be as much as seven hours; in a mid-latitude summer, eight hours; and in a mid-latitude winter, no time at all. On a winter’s day in the northern USA or Europe, light levels change steadily but slowly from sunrise to sunset. In the summer, the levels change more quickly at either end of the day, but very little for the hours around noon.

The thickness of the atmosphere affects the lights intensity – at higher altitudes, the light levels are higher. The atmosphere also scatters different wavelengths that are scattered the most, and these are at the blue end of the spectrum. So, looking away from he sun, you can see this scattering in the form of a clear blue sky. Looking directly at the sun, its color depends on how much blue has been scattered and lost; when the sun is high, very little is lost, but close to sunrise and sunset, when the light has to pass obliquely through a much greater thickness of atmosphere, the light is shifted towards red. The atmosphere close to the ground has the greatest effect on sunrise and sunset, and as these vary locally quite a lot, the colors can differ from place to place and from day to day, between yellow and red. Chroma key software can do some great effects for you.

The effect of the blue sky, which is also known as skylight, is so much weaker than direct sunlight that it is felt only in the shade. It acts as a reflector, and tints shadows. In addition to this on a clear day are the surroundings, which act as colored reflectors, and also the shadows: green grass; the walls of buildings, and so on.

postheadericon Portrait Studio

Bear in mind that a studio is simply a space in which you can control the lighting, and does not have to be a costly, state-of-the-art environment. Save money by building and painting your own fittings and backdrops. While professionally equipped studio can be daunting investment, it is by no means the only type. Naturally, professional photographers who shoot portraits of this highly controlled type, and do it constantly for living, can  justify the expense and upkeep. It may also be necessary for them to demonstrate their status in the industry. Clients have varied needs, and a quick change of idea or layout for a fashion shoot, for example, may require extra lighting, a different background or more space. It helps to be able to accommodate the requests within the existing studio facilities, and this makes for an inevitable redundancy, which costs more.

But if you don’t need to impress, and if you are prepared to go through a little more specific planning and preparation, all kinds of interiors can be turned into studios. The fundamental requirement is space – between the camera and subject, between subject and background, and between lights and subject.  What dimensions you actually need, rather than would simply like, depend on your preferred style of shooting and lighting.

Three things determine the length of the studio space: the lens focal length, the framing of the subject, and the separation between the subject and the background. A longer focal length gives more attractive facial proportions, but needs more distance. The further you are from the sitter, the less easy it is to maintain a rapport, and a natural compromise is a focal length between two and three times standard. In other words, an efl of 100mm or 150mm. Head-and-shoulders framing is the most common and this would typically need a throw of about two meters from camera to subject. As you’ll need a background, more often than not in the form of a seamless paper roll or the painted wall, it’s an advantage to have some distance behind the subject so that it can be lit separately and so that the person’s shadow from the main light does not fall on the background. Ideally allow at least a couple of meters. Likewise, you may explore the art of chroma keying where you use a chroma key software.

postheadericon Green Screen Wizard 6.0 with the Airbrush Editor for Windows

Green Screen Wizard Pro Studio Editor is a self-contained chroma key removal program that does not require Photoshop or any other photo editing applications to produce beautiful green screen photos. With a major upgrade released a couple weeks ago, Green Screen Wizard Pro 6.0 now offers professional photographers and hobbysts with the most powerful chroma key software available today.

The new Green Screen Wizard Pro Studio Editor is intended for those who demand the greatest flexibility in green screen photography. With its Sandwich Overlays, Shadow Generators and Special Effects it provides professional photographers an invaluable platform for doing business. Now with five layers to create amazing images using overlays, the software has full annotation capability that will allow unlimited text additions to images. With this feature you can create advertisements or your own magazine covers.

The Green Screen Wizard Airbrush Editor is the next step in the evolution of green screen software. In the past, clever algorithms had two jobs, first to determine if a color in the image was part of the foreground or part of the background. The second job was to act on the color to remove it, blend it with the background or just change its color. Both actions required a lot of guesswork on the part of the algorithm.

With the Green Screen Wizard Airbrush Editor you can use brushes to give the algorithm more information about the image and what part of the image needs to be changed. For example you can use a brush to erase areas of the screen that has shadows on it. If someone is holding green flowers or has on a green shirt you can use the Editor to restore the green color. The most amazing brush in the Editor is the hair brush. With this brush you can tell the algorithm the exact hair color you’re looking for and it will attempt to process any green areas that might possibly contain the selected hair color. This results in the very best hair restoration possible.

postheadericon Secrets to Chroma Key

The subject must not wear any of the blue or green screen color, be it his clothes or make-up. If he does, those areas will be replaced with the background image and will be marred with holes in the frame unless you are aiming for “bullet hole” effects.

As a general rule, matte will only be good as the camera used to shoot the foreground subject. The foreground video must have a high resolution and a low noise level. Green screen wizard software will do this easily for you.

postheadericon Chroma Key Problems

Chroma key technology has been a common tool for this days but looking for the best software is not as simple as we think. A lot has explored and take advantage of this handy and amazing technology. This imaging technique, however, could not be maximized because the users lacked technical understanding of how it works. There are a lot of problems encountered that can only be discovered only on the output. Most common dilemmas are actually attributed to lighting of backdrop and some spill reflected on the foreground subject. This dilemmas are actually very easy to solve. In addressing light problems, you should just put in mind always to make the lighting even that no shadows are seen. Correct position of light source, which should either on the side or on the back, will solve the problem. Of course, green or blue screens are the best backgrounds that you may use. On the other hand, your subject must be lit separately. Its light should not be the same as that you are using for your background. Your background should have a softer light to achieve best results. Lighting your subject to any color or whatever lighting effects, except the color you used on your backdrop, will be alright. Take note that the bigger the subject on the screen the better for chroma keying. By following the aforesaid suggestions, you avoid the blue/green fringe on the object or the subject and the most basic chroma key software available will produce wonderful results. One of the best chroma key software I have used until now is that of green screen wizard.
